In the hot seat: Insolation, ENSO, and vegetation in the African tropics

چکیده
[1] African climate is changing at rates unprecedented in the Late Holocene with profound implications for tropical ecosystems and the global hydrologic cycle. Understanding the specific climate drivers behind tropical ecosystem change is critical for both future and paleomodeling efforts. However, linkages between climate and vegetation in the tropics have been extremely controversial. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is a satellite-derived index of vegetation productivity with a high spatial and temporal resolution. Here we use regression analysis to show that NDVI variability in Africa is primarily correlated with the interannual extent of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). Our results indicate that interannual variability of the ITCZ, rather than sea surface temperatures or teleconnections to middle/high latitudes, drives patterns in African vegetation resulting from the effects of insolation anomalies and El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events on atmospheric circulation. Global controls on tropical atmospheric circulation allow for spatially coherent reconstruction of interannual vegetation variability throughout Africa on many time scales through regulation of dry season length and moisture convergence, rather than precipitation amount.

Reconstruction of the Central Zagros paleo climate and paleo environment
Introduction The study of lake sediments has been widely used in recent decades to identify past climate and environmental changes. Lake basins have significant spatial and temporal patterns and provide valuable evidences of physical and chemical changes. However, in general, the climate of the Holocene period has been more stable and uniform than previous glacial and interglacial periods. How...
متن کاملDeveloping a Tool for Analysing and Generating the fittest Urban Morphology based on Sky View Factor and Insolation: With a Case Study on Yazd
Urban morphology, including buildings’ typology and their configuration, affects sky view factor and insolation, which are two of the most influential parameters in urban microclimate. These become even more important in extreme environmental conditions. In this research, challenge was to generate various rule based urban morphologies in a parametric environment. Then, to evaluate them based on...

The study investigates the vulnerability of vegetation over Africa to El-Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events using the moving window statistical correlation analysis technique. The correlation analysis was done betweenNormalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data fromAdvanced VeryHigh Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and an ENSO index, namely Multivariate ENSO Index (MEI). The study devel...
متن کاملEffect of Contact Pressure and Frequency on Contact Heat Transfer Between Exhaust Valve and its Seat
The hot gases produced by the internal combustion engines passes through the exhaust valve and causes high temperatures in the exhaust valve and its seat. To avoid damaging the exhaust valve, heat must be transferred from the valve to its seat during the contact they make at the opening and closing cycle. Heat transfer rate from the exhaust valve to its seat is a function of many factors. One o...
متن کاملOrbital- and millennial-scale changes in the hydrologic cycle and vegetation in the western African Sahel: insights from individual plant wax D and 13C
To reconstruct variability of the West African monsoon and associated vegetation changes on precessional and millennial time scales, we analyzed a marine sediment core from the continental slope off Senegal spanning the past 44,000 years (44 ka). We used the stable hydrogen isotopic composition (dD) of individual terrestrial plant wax n-alkanes as a proxy for past rainfall variability. The abun...
